This Sunday Dr. Hemphill continues the "Devoted" series from Acts 2. So far we have taken an extensive look at prayer, walking us through the Lord's prayer in Matthew 6. Now we turn to "worship" as the next topic in our series.
When I think of this word, a couple of scenes from the Scriptures come to mind. Revelation 4 and 5 are probably the most vivid pictures of worship we have in the Bible. These scenes give us a glimpse of the activity that surrounds the throne of God for all eternity. What we see are a group of angels "myriads upon myriads and thousands upon thousands", and from Revelation 7, "a great multitude that no one can number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages" all singing the same song, "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and glory and honor".
Encompassing this throne described by John is a place in which lightning peals forth and thunder bursts! On this throne sits the one worthy of worship, our God, and standing next to Him is a Lamb as if slain, Jesus, our Savior! He has purchased salvation for us by His blood! Jesus is the only one worthy of worship!
The songs this week all focus on that very scene from Revelation. To the King is derived from 1 Timothy 1:17, and focuses on King Jesus as our eternal, invisible and immortal God that is worthy of worship. Here I am to Worship exalts Jesus as Light of the World and our great King of all Days that came as a servant and bore our sin on a cruel cross. Revelation Song is taken directly from the passage discussed above and reminds us of the holiness of our God. And finally, a new song/choir anthem called Holy taken from Psalm 29. The cinematic orchestrations give rise to the mood around the throne of God. Close your eyes as the choir sings and the orchestra plays to paint a musical picture of the holiness and wonder of our God.
